CYCLING, MONTROSE

Cycle Tours that includes or passes through Montrose

Local Cycle Routes

There are two Montrose Cycle routes from Montrose Caravan Park which provide twelve and four and a half mile circuits respectively of Montrose and its surrounding area.

Abbreviations: TL - Turn Left,  TR - Turn Right, SP - Signpost, No SP - No SignPost, LH - Left Hand, RH - Right Hand

Circuit of Montrose Town (4.5 miles)
The shorter four and a half mile route offers cyclists a circuit around Montrose, a bustling small town with a vibrant history, range of shops and a busy harbour.
The route passes by Montrose South Links Beach, a fine sandy beach with EU Blue Flag status and "Seafront Splash" adventure area and beach café.
Also on the route is Montrose Golf Course, the sixth oldest course in the world which boasts two superb courses, one of which is an Open Championship qualifier.
Montrose Leisure Centre is just a short distance from the caravan site. Turn left at the caravan site entrance and go over the humpback bridge to the Leisure Centre. The Leisure Centre is very well equipped and has a good café.

  1. TR at caravan site onto Trail Drive.
  2. Follow Traill Drive round to South Links beachfront. Here, you will find the Seafront Splash, a major adventure play area and beach café. Follow Traill Drive round past Montrose Golf Course which has 2 fine courses and is the 5th oldest golf course in the world.
  3. Carry on to Dorward Road then TR and TL onto North Street.
  4. At the end of North Street, you will Montrose Swimming Pool, a well equipped leisure facility.
  5. Turn right from North Street onto North Esk Road. Travel straight through mini-roundabout and up to traffic lights, left lane.
  6. TL onto Brechin Road.
  7. At a new mini-roundabout, TL onto Bypass cycle path.
  8. This cycle path follows the bypass all the way to Market Park - just beyond this, Somerfield and Tesco have well-stocked supermarkets in this area.
  9. From there, follow the bypass to King George V Bridge.
  10. TL into Wharf Street / River Street.
  11. TR into Meridian Street / Ferry Street.
  12. TR into Caledonia Street / Provost Reid's Road.
  13. At end of Provost Reid's Road, TR into Traill Drive and back to caravan site.

Circuit of Montrose Basin -  (12 miles)
The longer twelve mile route is more suited to experienced cyclists and circuits the Montrose Basin Nature Reserve. The route is fairly even with some undulating stretches but cyclists are rewarded with stunning views of the Basin and the Angus Hills.

The route passes several places of interest around Montrose including the Scottish Wildlife Visitor Centre and Bird Observation Point at Montrose Basin, and Mains of Dun Farm with its mill remains.

Another prominent feature is the eyecatching Bridge of Dun, a two hundred year old A-Listed monument and end of the line for the Caledonian Steam Railway, which runs from Brechin to Bridge of Dun at weekends during the summer season.

The circuit also passes within half a mile of the House of Dun, an impressive Adam built Mansion House run by the National Trust of Scotland and well worth a visit.

  1. On leaving caravan site, TL at main road and TL again before humpback bridge onto Provost Reid's Road / Caledonia Street
  2. TL onto Ferry Street / Meridian Street
  3. TR to River Street / Wharf Street
  4. At mini-roundabout TR across road-bridge across South Esk. Care is needed, as this bridge is quite narrow.  If very busy, use footpath.  Carry on until large roundabout at the end of Rossie Island Road.
  5. TR round roundabout and under rail viaduct on A92 Arbroath Road.  300 yards
